Richard (Rick) Herman – Member at Large
I served the church for 41 years in a variety of Lutheran-related ministry positions, initially as a Lutheran school teacher and principal in south Florida, then as the Director of Parish Services for the FL-GA District of the LCMS. For the final 23 years of my career I served as Vice- President and then President of Wheat Ridge Ministries (now the WeRaise Foundation), in Chicago, Illinois, where I was named President Emeritus in 2015.
My wife Deb, who retired in 2017 as Professor of Art at Concordia University Chicago, and I relocated to Asheville, North Carolina in 2018. Since our move, we have fallen in love with the beauty of western North Carolina and the friendly people who live in the Asheville area. Our church home is Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Asheville.
Since retiring, I have enjoyed serving on the board of directors of several impactful organizations, including the Karpenko Institute for the Nurture and Development of Leadership Excellence (KINDLE), the Concordia University Foundation, and Mosaic, a national Lutheran ministry that serves persons with intellectual and emotional disabilities. I have also remained an active participant in the Lutheran Grantmakers Network and Lutheran Services in America’s Lutheran Executive’s Alumni Network (LEAN). These opportunities to serve still leave ample time to enjoy traveling with Deb, visiting with family and friends, exploring the Carolina mountains, enjoying music of all types and playing an occasional round of golf.
Deb and are blessed to be the parents of two wonderful daughters. Kris, USAF veteran, currently lives in southern Illinois. Katie and her husband Tony live in SW Michigan, where they are great parents to our young granddaughter, Eleanor.
